EMI Calculator – Calculate Your Monthly Loan Payment

Taking a loan is a long-term commitment, and the monthly instalment is usually the first number anyone wants to know. This EMI calculator by SUSHIL FINVEST helps you estimate your monthly loan payment, the total interest you may pay and the total amount you may repay over the chosen tenure — before you sign anything.

What is an EMI Calculator?

An EMI calculator is a financial planning tool that estimates the fixed periodic payment required to repay a loan over a selected tenure at an assumed interest rate. In simple terms, it answers one question: “If I borrow this much, at this rate, for this long — what will I pay every month?”

Along with the monthly EMI, the calculator also shows the total interest payable and the total repayment amount, which together give a much clearer picture of the true cost of borrowing.

How Does an EMI Calculator Work?

The calculator uses the standard reducing-balance method, which is widely used for home loans, car loans and personal loans. It works with three simple inputs:

  • Loan principal — the amount you borrow, before any interest is added.
  • Interest rate — the annual rate charged by the lender, converted into a monthly rate for the calculation.
  • Loan tenure — the total repayment period, entered in years or months.

From these three values, the calculator derives the monthly interest rate, the number of monthly instalments and then the fixed monthly EMI. Part of each EMI goes towards interest and the rest reduces the outstanding principal.

In the early months, a larger share of the EMI usually goes towards interest. As the loan progresses, the interest portion gradually reduces and the principal portion increases. Adding up every instalment gives the total repayment, and subtracting the original principal from it gives the total interest.

EMI Formula

The reducing-balance formula used by this calculator.

EMI = P × r × (1 + r)n / ((1 + r)n − 1)
P Principal amount — the total loan amount borrowed.
r Monthly interest rate = Annual interest rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100.
n Number of monthly instalments = Loan tenure in months.

How the annual rate becomes a monthly rate: if the annual interest rate is 8.5%, the monthly rate is 8.5 ÷ 12 ÷ 100 = 0.0070833. That monthly rate is then used in the formula along with the total number of instalments. When the interest rate is 0%, the formula simplifies to EMI = Principal ÷ Number of Months.

Simple EMI Example

An illustrative example to show how the numbers fit together.

Loan Amount ₹10,00,000
Interest Rate 8.5% p.a.
Loan Tenure 10 Years

For a loan of ₹10,00,000 at 8.5% per annum for 10 years, the estimated monthly EMI works out to roughly ₹12,399. Over 120 instalments, the total repayment is approximately ₹14,87,880, which includes roughly ₹4,87,880 of interest.

How the numbers change

  • Increase the loan amount — the EMI rises roughly in proportion, and the total interest also increases.
  • Increase the interest rate — the EMI and the total interest both go up, even if the loan amount and tenure stay the same.
  • Increase the tenure — the monthly EMI usually falls, but the total interest paid over the life of the loan generally rises.
  • Reduce the tenure — the monthly EMI usually rises, but the total interest paid is generally lower.

This example is illustrative only and is meant to explain how EMI calculations work. Actual figures depend on the lender, the loan product and the applicable terms.

Important: A Lower EMI Is Not Always a Cheaper Loan

A longer tenure may reduce your monthly EMI, but it usually increases the total interest you pay over the life of the loan. A smaller instalment feels easier month to month, yet the overall cost of borrowing can be significantly higher.

Always compare both the monthly EMI and the total interest before choosing a tenure. The best option is usually the one that keeps the instalment affordable while minimising unnecessary interest cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about EMI calculation and loan repayment.

EMI stands for Equated Monthly Instalment. It is the fixed amount a borrower pays to a lender every month until the loan, along with the applicable interest, is fully repaid. Each EMI usually contains an interest component and a principal component, and the split changes over the loan tenure.

EMI is generally calculated on a reducing-balance basis using the formula EMI = P × r × (1 + r)n / ((1 + r)n − 1), where P is the principal, r is the monthly interest rate and n is the total number of monthly instalments. This calculator applies the same formula and updates the result instantly.

Yes. For the same loan amount and interest rate, a longer tenure spreads the repayment across more instalments, which usually reduces the monthly EMI. However, the total interest paid over the life of the loan generally increases.

In most cases, yes. A longer tenure means the outstanding balance remains unpaid for a longer period, so more interest accumulates. A lower EMI therefore does not automatically mean a cheaper loan overall.

Yes. This tool can be used as a home loan EMI calculator. Enter the loan amount, the interest rate applicable to you and the tenure to estimate the monthly EMI, total interest and total repayment for a home loan scenario.

Yes. The same reducing-balance EMI method is widely used for personal loans, car loans and other instalment loans. You can use this tool as a personal loan EMI calculator or car loan EMI calculator by entering the relevant values.

No. The result is an estimate based on the values you enter. It is intended for education and planning purposes only and is not a loan offer, sanction or a guarantee of any specific repayment amount.

Not always. Actual EMIs can differ because of lender policies, floating or fixed rate structures, processing fees, insurance, prepayments, disbursement timing, day-count conventions and other charges or terms. Always verify the final repayment schedule directly with the relevant lender.
